character information
Name: Hector Rhineskeep (The Pact Commander/Player Character)
Age: 34
Species: Human
Canon: Guild Wars 2
Canon point: Post End of Dragons, Act V (pre What Lies Beneath)

Abilities: Hector is a ranger. This is a largely non-magical class whose main "thing" is taming and fighting alongside animals. Any animal is fair game, really--some remain by his side as faithful companions, while some can be summoned or channeled through certain weapon skills (the warhorn, one of Hector's preferred weapons, for example, can summon a flock of birds to attack an enemy), and some are of no relation to him but will listen to his commands regardless, be it a vicious guard dog being turned to join their side, or insects infesting a jail to break the lock on his cell and let him out.

Outside of the pets, rangers are proficient in setting traps--spike traps, poison traps, pseudo snake pits, etc. Rangers are also capable of minor magic--summoning elemental spirits. These spirits provide buffs to allies in a small area around him, such as increased attack power, more defense, and even healing over time and reviving downed (not dead) allies, but they are immobile on their own and die after a short while.

Hector's preferred weapons are longbow, one-handed sword, and warhorn.

His subclass, druid, however, is one that relies heavily on magic. A druid's main role is to heal and to buff allies. They channel energies from the heavens to offer massive amounts of healing, cleanse debuffs from allies, and immobilize/stun enemies to keep them from running away. With a staff, Hector uses the power of the sun to offer concentrated healing, and can cause vines and flowers to grow for short amount of time.

Humans, as a whole, can pray to any one of the six human gods and briefly channel their magic. This includes praying to Dwayna for a small self-heal, praying to Balthazar to summon minor versions of his hounds, etc. These are not as powerful as his class skills, and are often used as a last resort.

History: As a human commander, Hector has a life before he began adventuring and eventually became the Pact Commander.

Hector was born younger child to the noble Rhineskeep family in the human city of Divinity's Reach. Blessed by the human goddess Melandru as a child, he has always had an affinity for nature, and would typically prefer the quiet company of plants and animals, but status and socialization had other plans for him. As he grew up and became close friends with fellow noble and local philanderer, Faren, he became very much what one might expect from a spoiled boy from a rich family and with good looks--selfish, acting like he owns the world, talking his way in and out of trouble. Despite Hector's intelligence and high level of education and combat training, their close association had Faren's reputation rub off on him, and his impression was more that of an irresponsible partyboy.

Regardless, with his older sister Deborah joining the Seraph, the human military, responsibility of future family headship fell to Hector. In his early twenties he was engaged to the daughter of another noble family. All was going well until, unfortunately, his family received word that Deborah's unit was ambushed by centaurs; the bodies were never recovered and were presumed dead. Hector took the news badly and spiraled in his grief. His irresponsible behavior eventually led to the breaking of his engagement.

He was in a terrible way for months. It was only when centaurs began to attack the nearby village of Shaemoor that Hector snapped out of it; he grabbed his bow and his bear and leapt into action, volunteering to fight alongside the Seraph and Captain Logan Thackeray. That split decision to help is what sent him down the path of eventual world hero.

Due to the diversity of character origin, and the variety of choices a player makes during the Personal Story (core game), there's no one wiki link I can give you. I can give you many wiki links, though! This page contains a brief overview of what happens in each Personal Story chapter with links to specific chapters at the bottom - this is Hector's specific path through the Personal Story (and that it doesn't have wiki links from the chapter titles KILLS me). The story is streamlined after the Personal Story, and you can find summaries of the rest of the chapters listed here. The GW2 Efficiency link is missing some of the story, so here's Living World Season 1 and End of Dragons.

Personality: Ever since Hector was given the title of Hero, he's been wearing it like he owns it. He is charismatic, friendly, sociable, and demands attention by his presence alone. He does good in a manner that is focused, driven, relentless. He will do anything to do what needs to get done, no matter how big or small the ask, even if it means harm to himself. Though often ruthless and destructive, it is all for the betterment and the safety of the world in his mind, and he doesn't take it well when his actions are questioned. However, how much of that comes from a genuine place of wanting to help, versus how much of it feels like an obligation simply because it's what he's been doing for ten years, is a bit of a toss-up.

He has forcibly molded himself to be what others expect of him. He often masks his upset or displeasure with action, or with an act of joviality. In fact, those not particularly close to him may only ever see his surface-level flippancy, which gives a first impression of irresponsibility. He isn't just an alcoholic flirt who stumbled into saving the world, honest.

Arrival item: Prismatic Champion's Regalia - an amulet made from the scale of the prismatic dragon, Aurene. Mechanically it won't do anything in game, but it does give him a rainbow aura and a trail of sparkles wherever he walks because he's gay.

Game plans: Hector is tired and extremely traumatized from having to shoulder the weight of the world for a whole decade, so letting him chill out and giving him something to do that isn't putting his life at constant risk (or burying himself in booze) would be a good thing for him to start the healing process. It'll be nice not having expectations constantly hoisted onto him, too. But can we talk about the dragons for a sec--
